millershollow - Back in the Saddle Again

Dark clouds loomed over the small hamlet nestled amongst the hills. Ravens and the occasional bat flew around the hamlet. The lack of people in the streets was obvious, even from the high up tree lined ridges. Inside the town, the houses, buildings, and shops appeared in disarray, falling down and untended too. The streets were choked with weeds, and windows were boarded up. Doors lay hanging half off hinges as if they had been burst open or broken through. One cottage had the words "Hell is in the Hollow" written across the door. Another said "I shoulda moved to Tabula". Yet another had "WOLF!!!" written across it. A few residences had completely collapsed, a few from being burnt to the ground, only some brickwork and charred remains showing that a house had even stood there. Rats, insects, and the occasional lone wolf or jackal were the only living creatures in the streets.

A dark and silent factory loomed over one portion of the town. Its smokestacks no longer belching out dark clouds of noxious smoke. In the center of town, a podium lay on its side, rope and an axe lying tossed nearby. The ground was stained with the color of copper through out the town square, a color that not even over two years of rain had washed away.

A foreboding manor surrounded by a iron fence and gate stood in front of the town square. A sign proudly proclaimed it the residence of the "Humble Mayor of Miller's Hollow". Adorned with gargoyles, its windows mostly broken, except for vermin, the only sign of life on the property was a ratty looking [info]duck sleeping next to a murky pond.

Under the manor, a stone crypt lid stirred, slowly pushing back. A hand grabbing onto the side of the coffin as fresh air flooded into it for the first time in years. A light from a lantern illuminated the staircase down into the dungeon and a butler materialized carrying a silver tray with a bottle of red wine and a glass.

"Good evening, sir" [info]Jeeves spoke towards the crypt.

"Good evening, [info]Jeeves." the Mayor spoke from the coffin.

"I have brought you a bottle of wine, sir. Did you have a nice rest?"

"Quite, [info]Jeeves." The mayor emerged from the coffin, brushing off some dust from his suit, and taking the offered glass of wine. "Prepare the town [info]Jeeves!"

"Prepare the town, sir?" the butler asked.

"Yes, get the work crews ready, fix up the cottages, repair the streets and grounds." the mayor responded.

"Of course sir, right away sir. Does this mean . . . ?"

"Yes, [info]Jeeves, I'm expecting some new citizens for the town. You see, my good friend, Millers Hollow is BACK OPEN FOR BUSINESS!"

I stretched and yawned as the sun crested the horizon warmed the grassy field that I lay in. Life had been so easy, lately. The weather was mild, game was plentiful and I could take all the vegetables I wanted from the small plot in Sadie's garden. Sadie, who could never be mine.

I was bored. It was time to return to civilisation. I made my way to the dusty path and started walking. I would put Sadie and her heartless ways behind me and keep walking until I found someplace new.

Miller's Hollow? Sounds like a perfect place to mend a broken heart...I'm in.
